Working on Yourself

Working on Yourself Does Not Have to be a Life-Long Process

The idea that we should always be improving ourselves or improving something in our lives creates a lot of pressure. And that pressure follows us wherever we go. The world consistently wants you to fix something. It wants you to become someone better than who you already are. And I get it. I am not immune to things and goals and the idea that surface growth is important, and in time, it may get you more. It’s possible you will ascend and put you in much better places and feel happier. For me, a lot of that type of jargon can become very superficial and is a disservice to all the accomplishments we have already made in life.

When we start to believe that there is always something wrong with ourselves and that there is always something more we need to fix or improve upon, do you ever really get to that destination? By definition, isn’t there are always room for some form of improvement? It seems to me, if we are not very careful, we will always be adjusting and refining and optimizing. With that mentality, isn’t it hard to enjoy your moments of real peace? Wouldn’t everything always feel like a project that needed to be completed?

There is a difference between growth and the constant need to self-improve. Growth allows for space while self-correction uses pressure to push change. With that type of added pressure, I would hate to feel like I have lost touch with that version of myself that was truly “already enough” before the illusion and distraction of “not enough” starts showing up. Understand that this approach does not halt your ability to evolve. In fact, it means you are becoming more honest about the “why” of changing.

Life and the loud noise of the world may tell you that you are completely broken or that every part of you is broken. I don’t believe that “broken” is something that should be applied so universally. And because of that, some things that could be improved can be without a grand plan or need a system upgrade. We just need the ability and will to slow down long enough to understand them.

Stay mindful….
