The Sound of Rebirth
The Sound of Rebirth
Don’t get caught believing that a Kind Rebirth is produced only from a study of religious and spiritual studies to be kept for oneself. Rebirths appear from inside of ourselves, but what modes fuel that inspiration? For me, music does that. Rebirths is a song that resides inside every human being. People have used music to heal, to transform, and connect with the divinity that lives within us and within others for many centuries across cultural backgrounds and traditions. Whether it’s the strong and stirring vocal techniques that inspires hope from gospel music bellowed from church choirs or it’s the rhythmic guttural repetition of vocal vibration of Buddhist and Hindu monks, there is a simple reverence that creates bridges between the human soul and the higher powers that sustain it.
That said, let’s briefly explore kind rebirths through musical inspiration. The deep revelation it provides grants us rediscovery of who we were, who we are presently, but most importantly, who we can grow to be. Music is beautiful because it is universally non-judgmental and it always allows us to explore our deepest and darkest secrets, or it reveals to us the person we want to become.
The Divine Nature
Music is a divine sequence and has a divine frequency that all holds meaning. In the Bible, for instance, the Psalms (which has been said they should/can be sung) are literal interpretations of songs that offer a range of emotions including the praising of the relationship between God and man and also the words to convey difficult emotions to God, as well. In the Hindu faith, the chanting the mantras of OM (or AUM) is believed to a primordial sound of the existing universe which aligns the human soul directly with the creation of life, divine principles, and Brahma (one of the Hindu trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). To the Muslim faith (As-salamu alaykum), the religious chants are a vital part of the call to prayer (Adhan). This is an important ceremonial event because it is meant to remind believers dually that God’s Word and the Word of God carry melody and meaning.
Rebirth of Spirit and Healing through the Sacred Sound of Music
Have you had moments where things in your life felt unsettled and uneasy? Have you ever just been in a mood where you felt down or just plain sad? I, like many others, have found that music tends to remedy an aching spirit and almost operates like a form of prayer. It has the ability to quiet the mind (or raise your spirits). It steadies the heart (or energizes your soul). It invites us to listen deeply and to hear the things we need to hear in order to move on.
Music has a divine quality, indeed. But there is no doubt of its impact on healing and its place in celebration. Gregorian chants are “the kind of singing that we do [to] calms the spirit and helps us live a peace with our world and with one another”, fittingly said by Abbot Philip Lawrence. Our Native American kin flute songs that honor the ancestors of their culture while restoring a harmonious balance with nature. Adding more to this varying list of cultures using music and sound to rebirth, chanting the very name of God, Muslims (Sufis in particular) believe this will lead followers into profound states of spiritual pleasure. It’s within these moments of musical dedication and devotion that the very words or the musical performance itself rises above ritual customs; it becomes the medicine that heals the soul.
Jazz Music – My Personal Resurrection
In the secular world, I think it will be very obvious that jazz music is my call-to-action, my connection to my spirit, and my detachment from the sorrows of the world around me. There is nothing like jazz. It feels like it is born from suffering and pain transforming into hope and inspiration. Jazz feels like it is testing man’s placement in experience as much as it is testing the musical instruments that are being used. Like the sounds of gospel music, it doesn’t just ask you to listen, it pours divinity into you. It tells me that a new day is possible but then asks me if I am ready to receive it.
I see jazz as a mirror to my spirit. It lives. It’s alive. It’s spontaneous. And it’s ever-changing. For me, a good jazz performance is like life. Our seemingly predetermined path is laid in front of us like sheet music. But when listening and watching a live free-form jazz performance and each musician has their own solo moment, they are allowed to let go of control. The musician can let go of the standard expectations of musical expression and freedom from the notes on his sheet music. Solos are a moment of risk and change and emulates life – living, falling, and rising with new focus.
Practice an Eternal Song
Rebirth through music. No religious affiliation is required. But if so moved, I support you. Let the music guide your intention in whatever way points you positively toward benevolence, happiness, mindfulness, and awareness. Rebirths, like musical inspiration, is not a one-time event. It is a continual life experience. It’s a composition of divine frequency whether it’s through prayer, singing, playing instruments, or even praise dance – let that rhythmic pattern awaken you.
Stay mindful…
