Focus

Focus on How to Focus

February 25, 20262 min read

When I used to think of the word focus, I used to think intensity. It’s going at something with unrelenting effort and drive. But in my later years, I’ve learned a little something different about focus. It isn’t always about how hard we grind. It isn’t that we can block out the world to focus with force. No, it’s a little different. Focus commands that we demonstrate respect of our intended goal. Focus transforms into the quiet decision to give some things up even if it’s just temporary. Sometimes it’s people. It can be our behaviors or our attitudes or even our beliefs. It doesn’t have to change them completely, but it does make us give our full attention to something.

Struggling with distraction is another one of those common things in life we all may suffer from that pulls from our ability to focus. It may be because we lack the required level of discipline or because the rewards we seek are fragmented. With everything in life starting to tug at us and pulling us in many different directions, it’s nearly impossible to remain on course. But to regain focus is to return. It is returning. When we choose to focus, we say to ourselves and to others that this matters enough for me to be here. It matters enough for me to gain presence of mind and presence of the moment. It’s not a halfway act; it’s complete absorption. We may need to find the way to stop thinking about the next big thing or the habit of rehearsing what to do next. Just be here.

To focus wholeheartedly is an emotional clarity that we use while in constant motion. We have to protect our energy and keep it from scattering everywhere. In doing so we keep our relationship with the goal from becoming shallow, superficial, or self-serving. It protects us from the desire to rush through. More importantly, remaining mindful of how to keep this movement in sync or in rhythm protects us from living that autopilot lifestyle.

Kind Rebirths isn’t more about doing and it isn’t doing more. It’s about doing it more with compassion and doing it with awareness. So, from now on when you converse, focus to deepen the conversation. When starting on a task, focus in the moment of how to refine it. When you seek to concentrate, focus on understanding the very moment you are doing it.

Rebirth doesn’t ask us to create new paths; it helps us choose to stand fully in the path you’re already on. My new definition of focus has become presence with intention. With presence and consistency, a whole new life emerges.

Stay mindful….
